How Can I Benefit From A Personal Trainer? ![]() There are many reasons why people go to a gym. It may be because you want to get fit, lose weight, meet new people or maybe you've given up smoking and need a new hobby to replace an old habit. But the one thing we all need to keep us coming back again and again is motivation. Motivation comes from variety, fun and enjoyment. If our visit to the gym can combine these key elements we are less likely to get bored and more likely to continue to come back. I 'fell' into personal training sessions quite by accident. I started the Get Results Programme with Fitness First and then met Bryan. I then joined one of his weekly spinning classes and personal training just seemed like the logical next step. I'd always used to think that personal training wasn't necessary. I used to go to the gym about three times a week and like most people I had my set regime. I'd do some cardio and then some weights and I usually left feeling that I'd had a good workout. After my first personal training session my perception soon changed! ![]() Personal trainers push you that one step further. They help you to work yourself harder, to really feel like you've had a workout. When your head is telling you to stop because it hurts or you're exhausted, a personal trainer encourages you to keep going. I don't think the word 'can't' is in their vocabulary. I've achieved more than I ever thought possible and I leave every session with a feeling of exhilaration (even if I am aching and knackered!). I've come to the conclusion that a certain zest for life, stubbornness and an impulsive spirit are pre-requisites to being a personal trainer and Bryan certainly seems to prove that theory! That said, his limitless enthusiasm, drive and determination is certainly infectious. Stop by one of his studio cycle classes and you'll see that he works just as hard as, if not much harder than the rest of the class, and he'll deliver at least, if not more than he demands of you, working and sweating right alongside you.
He is creative as well as demanding and I never know from one day to the next what each personal training session will bring, from circuit training, to resistance training, core muscle workouts, weights and cardio. I've now 'recruited' many of my friends and work colleagues to Bryan's personal training and studio cycle classes and would recommend you give them a try, maybe with your own friends and work colleagues through corporate or personal training sessions. The great thing about these classes is that they are affordable, because you can share them and split the cost with friends and colleagues.
As for the results, the first time someone notices the change in you and compliments you is always the most rewarding! My whole body shape has changed (see my 'Before' pictures - above and my 'after' picture - right, for further proof of this!)and so far (I'm a work in progress) I have dropped 5 dress sizes (6 in some shops!) and lost four and a half stone!! (63 lbs/27kg) in weight. I have much more energy to chase after an active toddler and more importantly I feel happier and healthier too! One of the most important things about the changes I have experienced is the health benefits I have noticed from losing weight. I tried to pick up the 27kg weight in the gym recently and sturggled to lift it, and yet my body used to drag around that weight everywhere I went, every day. It's not just your body image and self confidence that benefits from losing weight, it is your heart, your joints, your lungs, and I have noticed an improvement in more chronic complaints such as IBS as well. Being as significantly overweight (6 stone over the upper end of my ideal weight range, I was classified as obese, verging on morbidly obese) as I was for as long as I was (15 years) you 'bank' a range of health problems you aren't necessarily aware of, such as gall stones, fibroids and diabetes. These can continue to affect your health even after you have lost weight, so the sooner you can lose weight and become fitter, the better for both your short term and long term health. What's the best bit about having a personal trainer? Apart from the support and motivation I receive and the health benefits I have experienced, I recently tried on, fitted into and subsequently purchased my first pair of size 12 jeans in 15 years!! i was so happy I cried!! Overcoming A Fitness Stalemate In early 2007 I realised I had reached a fitness plateau and that my training was becoming increasingly routine and even easy. Naturally I increased the weights I was lifting and spent longer on the cross trainer or rowing machine but still felt something was missing. I had tried a spin class at Fitness First Great Marlborough Street and one day at the Godalming club I discussed this with Bryan who suggested I start coming to some of his sessions.
It was clear from the moment I started my workout with Bryan that his class was going to be nothing like any I had experienced before – it was HARD. At the end of a forty minute session I felt like someone who'd never
exercised in their life. Finally I had found a way of taking my fitness to the next level!
Bryan doesn't MAKE anyone work hard, that is up to the individual. What he does do however is encourage you to give a little more. He is also full of information and will happily answer any fitness questions you may have. As a direct result of the increased stamina I have gained from spinning and working out with Bryan I have started cross country running and am gradually upping my distances and speed, much to the delight of my demented English Springer Spaniel! So I say to anyone, fit or unfit, go and see Bryan if you want advice on exercise. You really won't regret it. Conway Churchill, Godalming. |

Fitting Personal Training Into Your Life
As a working Mother I found it difficult to find time to devote to exercise and it was all too easy to find excuses to do other things. But I was also unhappy with my weight and general level of fitness. What I needed was a programme that was designed for me and the motivation to do it regularly. This is what taking on Bryan as a personal trainer did for me.
At the outset, we established my issues and capabilities and then Bryan helped me to set some challenging but realistic goals. My goals included losing weight and running a personal best time in the Great South Run. Having the weekly commitment of a one-to-one session provided the motivation I needed – if Bryan had blanked out his diary for me, I couldn’t let him down. Each week he would push me further than I would have gone if I had been training on my own and would record my performance. After a few weeks he could demonstrate to me the progress that I had made which gave me further motivation to carry on. Under Bryan’s guidance, I became leaner and stronger.
Most memorably, Bryan agreed to be my running buddy in the Great South Run and despite the torrential rain and gale force winds on the day, I improved my personal best time by over 8 minutes! His reaction to my achievement was the thing I remember most – I think he was more delighted than I was. Training sessions with Bryan incorporate lots of stretching and I have become a convert to the importance of this in any exercise programme. The number of niggling injuries that I have suffered since doing so has reduced significantly. I would recommend getting a personal trainer to anyone – if you are very lucky you could get Bryan!
