Sports Massage Therapy

Whether you have sustained a muscular injury from competing in a sport, gardening or by picking up the weekly shopping, sports massage has a number of benefits, including:

Stress

Massage reverses the effects of stress by bringing about the relaxation response, which includes reducing blood pressure, heart rate, respiration rate, and the level of stress hormones in the body. It also benefits your ability to monitor stress signals and respond appropriately by sensitizing you to your body and improving your body awareness.

Better Circulation

Massage benefits blood and lymph circulation. Good circulation is vital to good health. The blood and lymph carry nourishment to millions of cells throughout the body and carries away waste products from the cells. Massage increases the flow of blood and lymph, encourages betetr exchange of nutrients at the cellular level, and promotes detoxification. Increased circulation also helps both prevent and relieve muscle tension - lack of circulation can lead to chronically tight muscles. In turn, chronically tight muscles impede circulation and do not receive enough nutrients.

Less Risk Of Injury

Massage relaxes tense muscles, enhances tissue elasticity and flexibility, and increases the range of motion in your joints. This makes it easier for the body to move. Therefore you are less likely to injure yourself because a less tense and more flexible body is better able to handle any movement you make, even sudden unexpected ones.

Less Pain

Another massage benefit is relief of muscle aches and pains. Aches and pains adversely affect health and drain away energy that could be used for other activities. Pain is reduced through the Pain Gate Theory. The gate theory suggests that sensory nerve fibres that react to temperature, pressure and sharp acute pain sends very fast signals as part of the protective motor response. The body experiences the massage stroke as an interruption of pain.

Treatment Of Soft Tissue Injury

Soft-tissue injuries heal faster with massage. Massage benefits you by reducing spasm, pain, swelling and the formation of excess scar tissue. Massage also breaks up excess scar tissue and adhesions that can weaken muscles and contribute to further injury. When you have a soft tissue injury the tissue fibers are torn. Scar tissue begins to form immediately at the injured site. Layers of new tissue are haphazardly laid down. This process can lead to excess scar tissue. Also, because scar tissue is not elastic, it can restrict movement of the surrounding fibers, causing further injury. Massage benefits you by creating tension and stretch that breaks up excess scar tissue and determine the direction of new tissue fibers. This makes the injured site much stronger and less prone to any new injury. Massage will also increase circulation to the injured area, bringing a rich supply of blood and nutrients and removing the waste products.

Better Posture

Your body works best when it is in good posture. Better posture means you move more easily and are less likely to experience pain and injury. Proper posture means that the shoulders are level, the hips are level, the knees directly over the ankles, and the feet point forward. Poor posture stresses the whole body. For example, if one hip is forward of the other, it creates torque in the body that stresses the muscles and wears away cartilage in joints. The key to improving posture is by relaxing tight muscles and strengthening weak ones, this can be done by using a combination of massage, and postural strengthening exercises.

And More Healthy Massage Benefits:
  • Massage helps strengthen your immune system.
  • Massage improves sleep. Sleep deprivation is a major concern as it does not allow the body time to repair itself properly.
  • Massage helps to promote deeper and easier breathing. Shallow breathing means your body is not receiving the optimal amount of oxygen.
  • Massage reduces anxiety and mental stress, creates a calmer mind, increases feelings of well-being and relaxes you.
  • Massage speeds recovery from exercise by helping remove waste products from the muscles.
